What She Say

“The Loss, The Light, The Love”

What She Say? Because that just might be all that matters … asking and listening to what she is trying to tell us … because we all know she loves us and is nurturing us so we can be our best selves and thrive … as she has the foresight to know we will carry on and honour her wishes … and so she will never be forgotten and she is reborn again and again … and in this we understand our purpose and our lives are all good and we each fulfill our destinies in sharing what she taught us to the next generations.

If only we listened or cared … unfortunately too many of us are struggling to survive … and there is darkness all around us as we become more desperate and overwhelmed by our losses. How do we turn this around? Where is the light? Where are the leaders? Can I help? Can you help?

She can help! There is much to unpack in what I’m trying to get at with both this album and title track What She Say. To start with, I can share some of my upbringing which shows how I’m one of 3 boys raised mostly by our Mother who was very candid about equality for women and that, even with all the progress, we live in a man’s world. I want to share more details about my Mom and try to quote some of what we remember her saying … enlightening, to the point, and open to interpretation … maybe insulting, maybe good advise … and I plan to come back to that in the future, as some of it is priceless, and worth sharing. For now, I’ll get back to why I feel I need to speak up about equality, gender, sex, balance, sustainability … being human … being insightful and inspirational.

It’s no surprise everyone struggles with their identity, gender, sexuality … when it is so awkward to speak up about it … openly … publicly. On one side, we want to be true to ourselves, and on the other we need to find our place in society … and find our mate(s) … and there is so much in this conflict … it can be frightening, it can be enlightening, it can be absurd, it can turn us on … or not. We can make light of it – and sure it can be hilarious – but forgive me here for trying to be serious as I delve / dig / dive into what makes this such a struggle. As I see it, we humans are all things on the feminine to masculine spectrum … and recently we can even decide if we are female or male and change ourselves physically … as we try to better define all the things we can be in between … as shows the ever expanding abbreviation LGBTQ … to 2SLGBTQI+ … to whatever it will be next … which is supposed to be inclusive, but needs more … I’m not represented in this ~ are you?

This is a man’s world
But it would be nothing, nothing
Not one little thing without a woman or a girl

Written by Betty Jean Newsome, girlfriend of James Brown,
who in 1966 took credit for and released It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World

Despite all the progress, we are still living in a man’s world … and we need better balance where we give more power to women and what is feminine, thoughtful, caring, nurturing … and less masculine, short-sighted, selfish, taking power, abusing the advantage of physical strength. With better balance we, as a species, will be better able to fulfil our destinies to protect our world and all living things.

The meaning behind the Song What She Say is that if you dare to Love with all your heart, then you have to accept Loss and heart break … that is the deal. The Song shares the loss of a loving and graceful woman who died giving birth … and how she was so brave and at peace with this. It can be healthy to remember this sorrow and feel this loss so we appreciate what has been sacrificed for us to be where we are now, as it helps us find inspiration and purpose. Surely there can be joy after sorrow … “You have to carry on to give it meaning”. The rest of the Songs on this album deal with this loss to bring us up from that low so we can again find Love and purpose … as it did for me in writing them … and continues as I play them again and again.

P.S. I had a hard time deciding on the title for this album … I almost called it “My Dear” as I’ve been sneaking the words / lyrics “My Dear” into several Songs when the feelings run deep and I go off script … it feels so right … might be a good title for future album … or a game when I’m playing this live and sing “my dear” … the first person after hearing this puts up their hand, yells “my dear”, checks into the website, … I buy you a drink or something.
