Donut Shop Owners
recorded on What She Say (2026)
The donut shop owner has a Ph.D. in Philosophy
And his wife has a Masters in Ancient History.
Poking fun at their patrons in their particular way
Never saying much – just a look, just a nod, just a “hey”
Hey, hey, hey.
They called him a loaner but he’d nothing to lend.
They must have meant lonely because he hadn’t a friend.
They called her a mother but she hadn’t a child.
They surely meant another because she was far too wild.
She rests the back of her head on the back of her chair
And stares at a star we made drift by, bye bye.
Far off look in her eye.
When the sun comes up he’s on his second cup.
Sits in the same chair, same stare.
Cloud thins into blue skies.
Same far off look in his eyes.
The donut shop owner, he knows just what to say
But she stops him with a touch and a shake of her head
Don’t interfere, my dear.
So the story goes they should meet some rainy day
I’m sorry to tell you it didn’t happen that way.
They walked the same streets, sit in the same seat.
May never meet.
She’s up half the night, he wakes early each day.
Oooh don’t you fear, can’t you feel so near
So near, feel you my dear.
